Frigidaire was founded in 1916 as Guardian Frigerator company in Fort Wayne, Indiana. First, it developed a self-contained refrigerator. This brand was so popular in the refrigeration field in the 1900s that many Americans called the refrigerator as Frigidaire. Earlier, the company was owned by General Motors from 1919 to 1979. During that time, the brand was initially a subsidiary of Delco-Light and later an independent division based in Dayton, Ohio. This division engineered the air-conditioning compressors for GM's automobiles.

In 1979, it has been sold to the White Sewing Machine Corporation. Finally, it was owned by Electrolux in 1986, its current parent.
