The damper directs air flow through the vent duct from the top or rear of your microwave, depending on your model, to allow the air to flow outside and prevent outside air from coming in. The ductwork that connects the exhaust vent of a vented microwave to the outside of a house can allow outside air to migrate into the house if installed without a flap-style damper or if the damper is damaged and does not close properly.
